Version 2.5
Many thanks to Matthew Bloch for going through my appalling code and adding
sounds in the necessary places. It really does improve the game. I've also
fixed a bug that occured when you tried to sell property to the computer
which was mortgaged and removed the © 1992 The Really Good Software Company
from the info box (it just didn't happen, sigh).
I am basically decided that I am going totally rewrite Monopoly from Scratch
when I get a Risc PC, and it's gonna be nice. In the meantime, if anyone
has any other sounds they want to include (perhaps different ones for each
token), I'm sure Matthew won't be too offended. Contacts at the end. Bye
Note for re-release 13/2/95
This help file was written shortly after the program in 1991. The program
has changed since then, and I really can't be bothered to rewrite it. I have
tried to delete any non applicable sections, but if there is anything that
seems out of place, that's because it is.
THIS PROGRAM IS BEING DISTRIBUTED FOR FREE. I retain copyright on all
the code, but I realistically don't expect any renumeration. This
game may be freely copied and distributed by P.D. libraries, on BBSs etc
without further permission.
!Help file for Monopoly
Monopoly by Lee McGinty, 1991-1995
HISTORY
=======
I wrote this program and designed the graphics (or had them designed) for
the coursework section of my A/S level computing exam. In case you are
interested (I know that you're not but I'm going to tell you anyway), I
scored 95%. It was originally Isle of Wight Monopoly, the reason was
that I felt I ought to change something felt that the Isle of Wight really
was a great place (apart from David Icke).
There have been several few updates since then, to remove a few bugs, and
then version 2 which runs from the desktop and has real street names.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
================
All of the coding and most of the graphics in this game are my own work, but
would like to thank the following people for making this game possible:
Kevin Early - for designing the Boat, the Hat and the original Car (even
though I didn't use it)
Warrick Patchett - for designing the dog.
Danny Flippance - for much programming inspiration.
William Gould, Jim Davies, Paul Stevens, David (Chally) Challoner and
Richard Johnson - for extensive testing and (sometimes) helpful comments.
Matthew Bloch - for taking the time and trouble to add sounds to the game
Philip Banks - for writing the Sound Handler modules.
Whoever wrote: Draw, Poster, Paint and Atelier, I used all of these programs.
I also used Watford Electronics B/W Scanner and a book of copyright free
artwork.
Thanks to you all and anybody else I missed out.
Monopoly is probably a trade mark of Waddingtons, although I suspect I
am acting against the law by realeasing this anyway. Actually I've got
a feeling that Tonka have bought the rights. Heck who cares?
INSTRUCTIONS
============
I bet that most people reading this section will have already played the game
a few times already and know how to play and are only reading this section
in case there is something they are missing out on that makes the game
easier, well there isn't. I am really mean so you can't have any
instructions. If you want to know how to play Monopoly then look at the board
game, the rules are the same.
Just a couple of hints to help you and stop your immediate frustration at
the game:
1. Actually there's only one tip now.
2. If you press a button on the mouse down when a token is moving, it will
move a lot faster (really useful when waiting for the boat to go back to jail
from Mayfair).
The icons around the screen are (clockwise from bottom left):
Rent: you must click here before the next person rolls their dice in order
to claim any rent you are due from other players landing on your property.
Roll dice
Trade: You need firstly to select a player to trade with, and then what
should be traded. You can select up to 3 properties to offer and 3 more
in return as well as a cash amount. The computer will put the offer to
the player concerned and ask whether he is interested in the trade.
Bank statement: Displays a bank statement giving details of how much cash
each player has as well as their 'assets' which is the total amount of
money that could be raised by mortgaging and selling properties.
Desktop: Returns to the desktop. Click the Monopoly icon to return. Same
as F12.
Sell properties: Use to sell houses or mortgage properties, and to view
property details. Click on a property to remove a house or mortgage a
property. Hold down the middle mouse button to display a property card.
Develop properties: Use to buy houses or to bring a property out of
mortgage. You must add or remove houses evenly.
That's your lot.
OTHER PD
========
Look out for the other PD that I have written/designed:
ShootEmUp An invaders game
Racer A racing car game (a la Overdrive on the BBC B)
Maze A very tricky maze game
All of these games run on the icon bar, yes that's right, ON the icon bar
and really have to be seen to be believed.
Dance A stickman that dances on top of the icon bar
DanceEdit A rubbish program to design new dances. Please rewrite it
somebody!
Probably the best desktop accessory of all time. Certainly beats hands
down those which just move backwards and forwards on the icon bar. This
is the best because it is the most flexible any dance style can be
designed. (In theory anyway).
Data An outline font.
I have also designed three other outline fonts: Opportune, Blippo and
Eurostile but they are not very good so they have not been widely
distributed.
AMENDMENTS
==========
Of course, you are free to change any of the graphics and the code (its all
in Basic), in your own copy of the game. But any distributed copies must
be the same as supplied by me.
If you make any major improvements then I would like to know about them. I
have not got the time to alter it now it is 'finished' but I realise it is
quite slow (I could use the 512+ version of OS_SpriteOp but I don't have the
time to change it). The main thing that I agree Monopoly needs is some sound.
Different sampled sounds as each token moves would be very nice; you know
hissing for the iron, barking for the dog etc. (What noise does a hat make?)
Anyway If you wish to get in touch with me for any of the following reasons:
You have found a bug in the Coding
You have dramatically improved the game (Faster or sound or making the
message boxes look better)
You have an overwhelming desire to send me some money
but not if:
Putting Monopoly on you hard disc has meant a loss of all data
You are from Waddingtons and I have commited an offence by writing Monopoly
